A native New Yorker, Joanna grew up in lower Manhattan into a family of music lovers. Thanks to two older brothers, Joanna saw her first rock concert at the age of 9 and started going to legendary nightclubs like
CBGB’s and
Max’s Kansas City while still a pre-teen.
Shortly after that, with her brothers band (Nekron 99) playing clubs, colleges and festivals throughout the NY area, Joanna started playing in bands too (Moppy Scuds, One X One, Valley of Kings) and started Loud Fast News, a music fanzine reporting on the local punk and rock scene and interviewing international acts like
Bauhaus and the
Dead Kennedy’s.
Joanna became a downtown fashionista, as a writer and editor for the
East Village Eye (a seminal NY periodical) and being photographed for the
NY Times by the iconic photographer
Bill Cunningham. Joanna also started working as a model and actor and was featured in various promotions for
MTV, Think Big Catalog, etc. She also worked on many videos and styled such icons as
Joan Jett and
Run-DMC.
She started working for
Manhattan Design, a very influential, award winning Graphic Design studio as a Marketing and Public Relations Rep. Manhattan Design was the studio who designed the MTV logo and worked on a multitude of album, tour merchandise and packaging, from
Sting, the B-52’s, Duran Duran, REM, 10,000 Maniacs, Scorpions, Billy Idol, Talking Heads, to Nonesuch recording artists like
Kronos Quartet, Steve Reich, etc. as well as many other artists and in various other industries.
Mon Star Productions was the brainchild of Joanna and her best friend Patrice Mack. As clothing designers they saw their designs worn on many including many of rock's brightest luminaries.
Joanna is also an Award Winning Jewelry Designer/Goldsmith and has designed jewelry for many celebrities including
Julia Roberts, Andie MacDowell, Annabella Sciora, Rita Wilson, Kelly Preston, Debra Wilson, etc. and her work has been seen in several major motion pictures. Working at the
Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco, Joanna became the Marketing Director and an Instructor and was integral to creating the first nationally sanctioned classes for
Mitsubishi’s Precious Metal Clay and the
Platinum Guild’s Platinum Casting Course. She was also responsible for the Revere Academy’s participation in the
Jewelers of America’s Certified Jeweler Testing Process. Joanna created sponsorship opportunities and donor relationships with many of the jewelry industries most prestigious manufacturers and governing bodies.
While in San Francisco Joanna garnered more design awards and her work was shown in several high profile art galleries across the nation as well as the
San Jose Museum of Art. She also opened and operated her own jewelry gallery in the Marina District.
Amongst Joanna’s awards are multiple
MJSA Vision Awards and the coveted, prestigious
AGTA Spectrum Award. Her Spectrum award winning finger cuff “Elation” can be seen in the
GIA Museum's permanent collection.
She could also be found on-air as a guest host providing expert commentary on gems and jewelry for
ShopNBC Television in the USA and on
HSE (Home Shopping Europe) in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This seven billion dollar industry continues to grow with no signs of stopping. When not hosting herself, Joanna often writes scripts for many other shows. These romantic descriptions are put together with jewelry product photos with the pertinent breakdown information (stone and metal weights, sizes, cutting, etc.)
Joanna continues to use her business experience in Design, Sales, Marketing, Communications and Media along with her aesthetic acumen in all her endeavors. From various design projects, personal styling to designing one of a kind guitar straps.
Her latest accomplishment is as an author. Joanna is in the final stages of completion on her debut book - a guide into the metaphysical. It is a companion to her new jewelry line of Talismans and Amulets for her
Wishcraft by Joanna Seetoo Designs line.
